It’s true that when it comes to Christmas markets, most travellers head to Germany and visit its legendary Weihnachtsmarkt. But I recently found a hidden gem in the heart of Belgium’s capital that in my opinion rivals, if not completely trumps, some of Germany’s most popular Christmas markets.
There are 2 big reasons why Brussels should be considered a top Christmas destination:
Reason No. 1: The Christmas market atmosphere is exactly the same as Germany’s but with one big difference: the food offering is significantly more diverse. The Belgian food stalls offer more options other than the usual German fare of krakauer in bread and other grilled meat including French, Moroccan, Turkish, and Italian. This will, of course, be discussed in further detail in another blog post.
Reason No. 2: An unbelievable Christmas lights show that takes place in the crowning of glory of Brussels, the Grand-Place. Every hour on the hour, from 5PM to 10PM, the Grand-Place serves as a stage to a spectacular lights show synched with beautiful music. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves this time of year, and no, you won’t find this in any of the Christmas markets in Germany.
