As big Game of Thrones fans, my husband and I definitely geeked out in Dubrovnik. To be honest, the medieval city oozes with such dynastic draw that it’s impossible not to. One look at the red-tiled roofs and you’re immediately transported to Westeros and King’s Landing. When we started to scale the old city walls, I heard someone humming the GoT opening sequence music and I was doomed—I whistled, hummed, and oooh’d-and-aaah’d the tune for the rest of the day.
Around town and along the walls, we searched for the most easily identifiable shooting locations. I especially got excited when we unknowingly stumbled upon the House of the Undying: I was walking around a circular structure and I stopped on my tracks the moment I realized what it was. At the exact same moment, another tourist who was walking towards me made the same connection to the TV series and we looked at each other wide-eyed and shrieked, “The dragons are in here!” Oh, geeking out is such fun!
Naturally, I took cues from the ladies of Game of Thrones and my travel wardrobe was Inspired by Cersei Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, Margaery Tyrell, and the other feisty females from the series. If Littlefinger can walk the streets of the Seven Kingdoms in a floor-length dress, I will, too.
I bought my trip souvenir from Split from one of the jewelry stalls along the east wall of Diocletian’s Palace. The palace is primarily built of white local limestone and marble, most of which was from Brač—an island close to Split known for its marble quarries. So when I saw a simple ring with the same polished Brač stone, I knew it was the perfect Inspired buy. Wearing it is literally taking a piece of Croatia along with me.
